XFree86 configuration is the great weak spot of Debian. I have a good
friend who was very smart but could never get X working on Debian. They
used to use an older configurator which worked, but then development
moved to other programs. My understanding is that the other X
configurators were buggy, or closely tied to certain distros. Work is
underway to to adapt a configurator to Debian.

Generally, I just skip X configuration, finish the install, and then
edit /etc/X11/XFConfig by hand. XFree86 4.x is FAR easier to configure
than 3.x was: you almost never need Modelines, e.g.

Wow. No package owns /etc/resolv.conf, which is VERY rare. Perhaps your
install isn't progressing to the point where that file would be created.

All you need is:

nameserver 127.0.0.1

with the IP address of your local DNS server.

Debian's 52 required packages (new, small libs like libblkid1 and
libuuid1 have upped the number, but not the size) provide network
configurability. They should be on your system.
