I like the old Orinico (or Dell TruMobile, same thing) silver and gold
PCMCIA cards.  They've really been the best most reliable performers. 
I've used them with external antennas (they have a little antenna port)
and gone some amazing distances.  You can get them on E-bay for
nothing.  And I use the PCMCIA/ISA cards also availble on E-bay for
nearly nothing to put them is dekstop style PCs.  I'm so happy with the
Orinoco cards thats really the only option I've explored.
