No go nothing was running but I do have more error messages to add:
"failed to unlink lock /home/britz/.gconfd/lock/ior: no such file or 
dircectory
gconf-sanity-check-2 did not pass

It seems to be denying permission to "remove locks"  in 
/etc/opt/gnome/gconf/gconf.xml.defaults
