Here's a guess. Switch to a virtual console, login as root, look for
processes running as your normal userid ("ps -fu britz") and kill them.
Then try logging in.
Redhat used to have the same problem, and I had to add some kill/slay
commands in my xdm Xreset script to "fix" the problem on SuSE 9 too.
