Try creating a new user and see if they can login.
Or try blowing away all your britz gnome settings and login fresh:
rm -fr ~/.gconf* ~/.gnome* ~/.gtk* ~/.qt*
and maybe other directories, I don't recall exactly.
Then of course you'll have to redo all your custom desktop settings.
