What's in your /etc/opt/gnome/gconf/gconf.xml.mandatory directory?
Mine is empty.  If you have any files in your's, try deleting them.

Does this command list any files?   "rpm -V gconf2"
If so, maybe that RPM needs to be reinstalled?

Or, I hear KDE is really nice ...   :-)
