After your previous command there is no longer a gconf directory.

Yes it does.

While mucking around the internet after I sent my last message. I came 
across otheres with the exact same problem. Of course this was on the 
mailing list archive on ximian site (duh). I tried there solution but I 
got an error after my first command
 rpm -Uvh --replacefiles --replacepkg 
/var/cache/redcarpet/packages/gconf2-2*
The erroe was   --replacepkg: unknown option
And so I was unable to continue. But it appears I may be getting closer to 
a solution.

I have been told that as well. But alas I am willing to continue with my 
struggles with XD2. I mean hey it is linux there is usually a solution 
shortly after a bug. And besides I am learning so much. :)
