Throw the O'Rielly IMAP book into the nearest fire.  It is so incredibly out of
date it is shocking they are still publishing the *#&*(!@^*$&@() thing.

You MUST have BOTH a cyrus.conf and an imapd.conf;  if you do not then your
packages a broken. (Don't know anything about Debian packaging).

Is Cyrus running?

Then it isn't going to work.  You need imapd running.  What version of cyrus is
this?
