Or thumping it with the butt end of a large screw driver works too; and
provides a more 'The Fonz' aura.

Me too!  

I got the advice from an IBM'er if I recall correctly.  Has to do with
out-of-round bearings, the adhesive behaviour of the bearing lubricant,
and the starting energy limitations of the stepper motor.  Long
complicated theory thats sounds like a load of crap.  

Besides that  - I've lost count how many times this trick has worked.
