Let's not forget the freezer:  Put a failing/marginal hard drive in the 
freezer for a while (in a ziplock ot keep condensation down) then attach it 
to your box and fire it up before it has a chance to warm up.  Keep it in the 
plastic bag, again to prevent condensation.

If it works, pull your data off of it ASAP.
