According to spec, the higher speed IDE modes require an 80 wire cable, 
even though the connectors are only 40 wire.  Some kind of differential 
signaling trick with the extra ground wires that I've never understood.  
Cables that come with a drive that supports these higher speed modes 
(ATA 133, 100, and I think 66) are almost always 80 wire.  It's easy to 
tell by looking at the wires, and they usually have a blue connector at 
one end, which goes into the motherboard or controller.
