Beowulf clusters are clusters of commodity hardware (i.e., normalPC's)
that are collectively used to solve large computational problems. Their
popularity is due to their incredible performance perprice ratio when
compared with traditional, proprietary supercomputers. These clusters
can be built with a dozen sparecomputers or thousands of
state-of-the-art systems. And in keeping with the preference for
non-proprietary products, these clusters always run some version of
open-source software, usually Linux. The ParIntResearch Group at Western
Michigan University has such a cluster, named "Athena". This talk will
discuss the interesting history of Beowulf clusters, and how they are
configured, used, programmed, and administered, along with some
impressive examples of the top clusters out there today.
