Or because the corporate owners of the code wouldn't let it be extended?
Why blame the geeks?
As far as I'm concerned, this is one reason why Linux/*BSD is
progressing more rapidly than *nix ever did. When application
programmers need a feature in the kernel (e.g., dentry) or in the OS
(hotplug) they can add it and see if it garners any general acclaim. You
couldn't do that on a lot of the proprietary Unices.
