[KLUG Members] Old server spontaneously reboots

Greetings all,

I have an old VA Research samba file server that for no apparent reason has
rebooted twice this week. There are no entries in the log files about the
server going down. When it comes back up e2fsck reports the system was not
shut down cleanly and runs a file system check.

I am open to suggestions as to what is going on here. I suspect that after
running continuously for six plus years the power supply is getting flakey
and needs to be replaced. My second guess would be the six year old UPS
getting flakey.

I am working towards replacing the entire server with an embedded Linux
based NAS. However, it is taking much longer than I anticipated to get a
couple of mission critical apps rewritten. They will be hosted on another,
newer box. Then this file server will be much less critical. I think I am
stuck keeping this thing running till then.

Regards,

Bob
