I run into a simular problem lately. I updated the kernel and some 
packages with YOU (yast online update for the unknow to SuSE fooks).
Some libraries did not want to load any more and henec some program did 
not run either; just because of a conflict between the kernel and libs 
versions.

I knew I update to a kernel way beyond the 2.4.21-99 I was using earlier.
But uname -a did still give me a -99 kernel. Rebooting did solve 
everything. YOU does update the kernel but does not make it the running one.
