FWIW, I did an upgrade from SuSE 9.1 to 9.2 on a box with mplayer on it.
(mplayer rpm's I downloaded for SuSE 9.1, not part of any SuSE distro)

The upgrade complained about some library no longer being present for
mplayer, so I told it to ignore the problem.

After the upgrade I noticed that a library that mplayer needed was
replaced by a newer version, so I created a symlink to the new lib
version and mplayer seems to run fine now.
