While they're looking at the screen they see when they click to "View
workgroup computers," they click on the machine to see the shares. It
fails and says blah blah "The network path was not found"

Well, in the log these lines seem significant:

Samba name server LINUX9 <sambaserver> is now a local master browser for
workgroup MYWORKGROUP on subnet 192.168.0.103 <ipaddress of samba
server>

But then later it says:

nmbd/nmbd_browsesync.c:find_domain_master_name_query_fail(358)
  find_domain_master_name_query_fail:
Unable to find the Domain Master Browser name MYWORKGROUP<1b> for the
workgroup MYWORKGROUP.
Unable to sync browse lists in this workgroup.
