Yes it solved it. I found a uselessnet post moments after posting the question
(of course).
UsePAM enables to use of PAM, PasswordAuthentication enables the acceptance of
clear-text passwords over the tunnel. Tunnelled clear text passwords seem to
be all that putty supports.
