I'm assuming we are talking about end-user-apps.

Is grep even a console app, I thought it was a CLI app.

console = ncurses (full screen text), as far as apps is concerned.  Developing
console apps is brutal given all the vageries of termcap/terminfo.  GUI
developement is easier by a long shot.

Yep,  choosing M$-Access/JET as a platform is just cataclysmically short sighted.
