It worked. The export seemed cranky.  I would select what I wanted, pick
export to bitmap, then set the size in the selection tab of the export
dialog and it would only export part of the selection....  didn't seem
to make sense.

So I grouped all the objects selected and dragged the corner till the
box said I was at the desired size, then exported the entire page and
cropped it with gimp.  But I got what I wanted and the images look very
sharp.

A second bite was that converting to GIF (256 colors!) totally mangled
the images.  So I exported them as PNG, renamed them to .gif, and....
the application is perfectly happy.   They get downloaded to the browser
(wrong extension and all) and are merrily displayed.
