I installed Drupal a while ago looking for an alternative to Mambo.
(http://www.mitechie.com) I haven't gotten very far but I've tried out
the Gallery module a bit. It's not that great as you can see. The bad
part is setting up the gallery. You need to first go to admin->create
the gallery. Then you add each photo as a new content item with it's own
title, description, etc, and tie it to the gallery you created. 

I think it's much better for one-off images and such than for a full
image gallery.
