Just for fun, I gave it a try this morning on my Linux box at work.
(testing it with a HPUX box w/DISPLAY set to my Linux box).

That change did NOT work with gdm.  So I did a little research and found
w/gdm you need to edit:  /etc/opt/gnome/gdm/gdm.conf  and set this:

DisallowTCP=false

Then restart X (init 3 / init 5), and all works fine now.

Not sure about kdm/xdm/{other}dm's...
