Work-around Success. I had an "extra" partition on the Sony HDD so I
installed a basic version of Mandrake there, mounted the partition that had
the old Mandrake to '/home/old,' mounted the Maxtor external HDD and copied
the old files to the external HDD (after a bit of confusion because of all
the similarly name folders and files....)
