Oh well, worth a try; guess I misunderstood journaling.  It sure /looks/ 
like "logdump" is supposed to do something like what I wanted, and that 
it's supposed to do it for journaled filsystems like ext3.

Thanks again!  You're all correct, of course, that backup hard drive 
space is cheap these days.  It had occurred to me.  But my IDE slots are 
full and RH8 can't seem to read large external USB drives.  I know, I 
know--I'm saving up for a new computer to run FC4!
