That's my guess, embedded fonts.  That would explain why opening a doc
created in Word (and thereby losing fonts) would save as a smaller file.

My version of OO didn't have any embed/no embed option when printing to
PDF, but I know embedded fonts can make a big file size difference in
PDF files.
