With FireWire, there are a few manufacturers of chipsets. If you get
one of the really obscure ones, you can obviously expect trouble
(I've seen a few posts to Mac forums about "I got this really good
deal on a FireWire enclosure, but it does _____ when it should _____")
My drive has an Oxford 911 chipset for example (the same chipset, in
earlier firmware revisions, that lost data. This was the firewire
"problem" that OS X Panther had.)
My only guess about USB (and firewire) is that it's a standard that
everybody adheres to, so you don't need separate drivers. Take a look
at mice or keyboards or EIDE drive controllers...
