Mozilla, the suite - Seamonkey, has a decent gui newsreader.  I like
slrn for text only newsgroups.  Most linux distributions have more
than one news reader ready to go after the initial installation, if
you do a 'full' install.  Knode, pan, Mozilla, slrn, or maybe others
depending on you distribution.

I do not like web browser based nntp clients, like google groups. 
Moving around between groups feels clubby.  Threading is miserable. 
The only good thing is the searchability, that is the only time I use
google for newsgroups.
