This is normal and what vncserver was meant to do.  There is an X module
that must be loaded to export the "local" display (whatever that means
in terms of X :).  In recent versions of SuSe this is a simple
click/checkbox in the display section of YaST.  Prior to that I think
you had to exit the X config file (whatever it is called these days).

Right, it can be changed to any of the display managers.
