Could that be because the manufacturers are going to the all in  one
(print/scan/copy/fax )type?  Is there a way to determine if an all in
one driver will work on a stand alone scanner.  That would be an answer
to your problem if I understand it.  I have a similar problem with a 2
year old HP scanner.
