Just curious.... Are you saying that you cannot (or will not?) plug your
(powered-off) scanner into your SCSI cable while the PC is running? Why not?

Although it's usually already connected, I wouldn't give a second thought to
plugging the SCSI cable into my old, reliable HP ScanJet 3c while the PC was
powered up and the scanner was powered off.

In fact, that scanner is never powered up unless I'm using it, in which case a
simple 'rescan-scsi-bus' (re-)detects it.

As far as taking too much desk space, do what I did -- build a platform for
the scanner, leaving room underneath to store other things. My platform is
high enough to have a big shelf underneath the scanner for miscellaneous
things and still have room for my Shuttle (small form factor) PC and the UPS
underneath that. When you run out of room horizontally, go vertical! :^)
