My scanner (YMMV) is technically not hot-plug'able.  My experience
mucking with such things can cause power spikes on the bus, causing
problems with other SCSI devices on the bus, and crashing the machine
even if it's the only SCSI device on the system.

And if it's the last device on the SCSI chain, as scanners commonly are,
now you're talking about removing and reinstalling the SCSI terminator,
which can cause even more problems, especially with other SCSI devices.
