Asterisk is *THE* package,  like Apache is to web serving (sure, there are other
packages, but why....).  Yes, it works,  very well, scary well.

Configuration can be mind-bending due to the whole raft of new telephony
terminology that makes WAN, LAN, RAM, CPU, PCI, and BUS seem obvious.
