Evolution is the only client-side MUA I know of that does allow
modification. It works pretty well.
Thunderbird is read only just like Outlook; but you can sync via Sync4j
as described before. (Personally I think Thunderbird's address book is
about the worst implementation of the address book concept I have ever
seen).
If you want a web interface then Turba works very well with even a
rather complicated Dit.
There may also be some simple LDAP address book applications around
written in .NET
