Any application will run from the comman line

We'll have to see what you see.  It may emit messages, at least we hope so.  I
gaven't seen FF hang or crash in a very long time so I've got no guess;  if I
had to choose 'out-of-the-blue' I'd just blame your choice of 
Mandriva/Mandrake
- I see an inordinate number of posts about problems with basic functionality
from people who choose out-of-the-mainstream distributions [not SuSe,
Redhat/Cent, or Debian] (although Gentoo certainly holds the lead by a healthy
margin concerning posts about things that should 'just work' and don't.)
