Open a terminal window and type
firefox
The program should start and it will actually look like the term window
is hung - it will spit output (if any) until you close the program.
Although on Fedora it started (without error) and went back to the
prompt for me

Does the page try to load any plugins? Java, Flash, Shockwave?

Many times I have found that DNS (and DNS timeouts) is an issue. And it
may be that firefox just can't find the resource. Is it still having the
same problem 12 hrs later?
