When logging in a Gnome session;
whether logging out from another user or rebooting; the number lock
engages.

** is this on SuSE? I seem to remember a tpconfig utility that was gtk based. Should be in the Software Manager.

This wouldn't be a bad thing except that on my Thinkpad T30 I
can't turn it back off w/o having a keyboard to plug into it and of
course this eliminates portability or being able to type somewhat
legibly.

** Make sure your layout is specified correctly. My Dell needs "Notebook Dell Inspiron 6xxx/8xxx Layout in order for the panel buttons to work. I know the Fn key should work no matter what with Thinkpad. That's a bios level function.

Did I forget the secret handshake?

** if there is one I am in trouble... :-\
