Are you sure that the laptop itself is 'ok'? I have an old Compaq laptop which does things on it's own regardless of me doing
anything. It does it in *nix or in windows. I am satisfied with the reasoning that their is a hardware error with my problem.

Perhaps try to run a live cd and see what happens.
