Nik,
    I don't need Gnome, matter of fact I almost went with KDE instead. 
The fact that Novell bought SUSE and a lot of the Gnome developers were 
also brought into Novell was where that decision came from. That's 
interesting you say that about Thinkpad configuration, I had to have my 
installer figure out how to get that running, Gnome did nothing. I also 
have a 40 gig hard drive, must have been standard for IBM. I'll probably 
drop it off and have Gnome deleted and KDE installed as well as have the 
other issues looked at. I must have screwed up something that started 
the dominoes tumbling.
