In that case I'd suspect something pathological with the laptop.  All
the OSs that choke are truly 32-bit preemptive OSs,  Windows 98 isn't.
If Win98 is the only one that runs I suspect their is something deeply
wrong with the laptop (bad memory, etc...)  LINUX in console mode (minus
X) should "run" on just about every bit of hardware you can find.
