Backing up laptops:

1) rsync to a network drive.

2) rsync to an external USB hard drive. *

* Make sure you have USB 2.0 HI-SPEED. Anything slower (USB 1.x, or
USB 2.0 FULL-SPEED) and you can retype the stuff faster. Firewire is
also a good option if that is available.

Can we get back to the original question, the model of Compaq you were
asking about? Can you be more specific on what you want to know?

Are you shopping for a laptop and just saw a good sale on that model?
i.e. Are you really asking for a recommendation on a good Linux
compatible laptop to buy, if so what are your criteria?

Or do you (or a client) already own that model and you want more
information about getting Linux to run on it? If so what specific
problem(s) are you having with Linux on that laptop?
