If you get recognizable video then it is almost guaranteed the X has
detected all these settings correctly.  The problems you describe are
caused either by problems with the sequencing of commands to the video
controller, the bitblt memory getting trashed somehow, or straight up
bad RAM.  The solution is to either tweak the settings for the chipset,
such as disabling acceleration options (since they aren't working
anyway), or replacing the video card.

Yours is an "old series" chipset.
