Does it happen if you ssh localhost from the box itself?

If not, sometimes it is a problem with the video driver.  In those cases
it isn't hung, it just isn't showing the information in the window.  Log
in from your Win box and try highlighting everything in the window. 
Sometimes the highlighting will force everything on the screen to
"appear."

I'd also try logging in from another box to help identify where the
problem lies.
