Actually, you should ask them whether they could save it to another
format. It might be able to save Word documents itself, or, being a
desktop publish package, if the version is recent enough, it might save
to HTML (web page). Either of those should come up in OpenOffice easily.

Also, maybe give them a gentle warning about sharing documents in
obscure file formats. ;)
