[KLUG Members] Xsane and Sane problems

Hello Everyone,
     I'm trying to reinstall Xsane after switching to KDE on SUSE 10. I
went to <http://xsane.org/> and downloaded the latest stable release,
'xsane-0.991.tar.gz'. Then after reading the instructions there
carefully I went to <http://www.sane-project.org/> and downloaded the
latest stable backends release, 'sane-backends-1.0.18.tar.gz'. Then
following the directions on sane-project I uninstalled the previous
versions of the sane backends with Yast. So far so good. I then
proceeded with the tar archives as directed by their respective readme
files. './configure' 'make' and 'make install' were next in the top
directory of the decompressed sane archive. Okay, then on to the to
the same to the decompressed xsane archive. Then I installed Brothers
scanner driver 'brscan2-0.2.1-0.i386.rpm' using Yast. I edited the
/etc/fstab file as directed by Brother as follows: For SuSE users:
change the line in the /etc/fstab file from: 'none /proc/bus/usb ...'
to 'none /proc/bus/usb usbdevfs auto,devmode=0666 0 0'. Then the
following as well: Modify the USB access control
$ umount /proc/bus/usb
$ mount /proc/bus/usb
$ mknod -m 666 /dev/usbscanner c 180 48
So far so good.
     Now for the trouble, during boot I still get the error message
about being unable to mount /proc/bus/usb as well as usbdevfs being an
invalid file type. During shutdown I also get a failed message about
san-dev, possibly something to do with runlevel? It goes by in a
hurry, sorry. Xsane tells me there were no scanners found with similar
results from Kooka and StarDraw. sane-find-scanner gives me this:
found USB scanner (vendor=0x04f9, product=0x0183) at libusb:001:002
   # Your USB scanner was (probably) detected. It may or may not be
supported by # SANE. Try scanimage -L and read the backend's manpage.
  Try scanimage -L and read the backend's manpage.
scanimage -L gives me this:
No scanners were identified.
     Before I do something that would be stupid like creating symbolic
links or even deleting them what should I look for?
Peter
