No, you really don't. I've been through that myself, and believe me, you
do NOT want to have to sort through a ton of spam looking for one or two
emails that MIGHT be important. Seriously, no one has the time! The
worst part is having to do it day after day, because if you don't,
well... I came home after Thanksgiving last year to something around a
thousand messages after about four days away. I was lucky enough to be
able to set up my own filtering sytem on that service (their own sucks),
and coming home from Christmas wasn't nearly the same nightmare, thank
heaven.

You also don't have to depend on your ISP for email. I would recommend
looking into other email providers. There are at least a few out there
where you can set up a free account. I have one on fastmail.fm, for
example. Just look up 'free email' on Google, or look at mail.google.com
itself.
