Years ago I settled on Debian as our distro of choice.

This Spring, Etch let me down royally, Ubuntu Server 7.04 picked up the slack.

So I loaded Ubuntu 7.04 desktop on a test box. Then I went through the upgrade process to the 7.10 beta. Most impressive! One simple command to type in, enter my password, click through a few dialogs.
That was it!

Ubuntu 7.10 will ship with the current versions of both Firefox and Thunderbird.

I tested out backing up my TB profile and restoring to Ubuntu. 15 email accounts, 10 NNTP servers all came right out without a hitch!

My Firefox profile moved equally well.

One initial web site I tested had a bit of Java in its makeup. Ubuntu's new hand-dandy plugin finder popped up and quickly displayed my choices for flavors of Java. I selected Java 1.5.13, and without
exiting FF Ubuntu added JRE and started running the Java on that web page.

Visiting another site, I needed Flash. Again the plugin finder popped up and said it had Adobe Flash available. It added it quickly and without a FF restart Flash began working.

Also I am testing out Parallels (a VM implementation) on Ubuntu 7.10. Their latest build (2204) installed / compiled successfully on Ubuntu 7.10.

So, native Mozilla products, and the rest in a VM session... Linux is looking ripe for prime time on my desktop...
