In essence, yes. ALSA can be used as a Kernel module (better) or a
separate driver. Its best to use in kernel alsa, although you either
need to update your kernel or re-compile your own. Its not too tough,
but you may wish to follow a good guide out there. If you get the
sources and do a 'make oldconfig' it will create a config file based on
your current kernel so that all you have to do is change the options you
want changed.
