Because you are in a metal building, I would suggest not doing
wireless. (actually more work than if it were in an open setting).
I managed the network at a company whose main building covers 38
acres. Network consists of Twinax, STP, UTP, MMF Fiber and now
wireless. Fiber really isn't that expensive, is immune to noise, and
isn't difficult to install.
My ST termination kit was just under a thousand dollars, also buy
some mechanical splices for the 'whoops' and rent or borrow
PalmMeter, Light source and an OTDR.
On a quick note on wireless: Wireless does not always imply
bridging. Most wireless cards support peer to peer, which also does
not require an access point and can act as a standalone broadcast
network (CSMA/CA -which is quite close to the 802.3 CSMA/CD). 802.11
runs reliably at 11Mbps in most situations. Yes, there are many
limiting factors, but those can be isolated or worked around (like by
changing from channel 1 to channel 7). You can create quite a large
complex network with wireless using Accesspoints in COR or ROR mode.
I had a wireless government project in South Bend earlier this year
that was quite fascinating because of the challenges faced.
There are many ways to skin this rabbit, so look into the other
alternatives as well (like infrared or tin-cans and a string).
