This was a fresh install, not an update, right?

Many thanks, Bruce, for the test. My problem stems from my updating
RH6.2 and
so inherited some features that are screwing up fonts on gnumeric
somehow.
Since I don't know what test to suggest, blow away when you need to.
My problem may be related to my not being able to print, which I've not
really worked on. When I give the command:
echo 'hello' | lpr
I get:
sending job 'deal@localhost+305 to localhost@localhost
connecting to 'localhost', attempt 1
cannot open connection to localhost - Connection timed out
Make sure LPD server is running on the server.
I get the same behavior after verifying that lpd is on via printtool.
Right now ps -ax shows lpd Waiting
Does RH 7.1 refer to the user as xxx@localhost or do I have some network
working
unintentionally?
Puzzled, Ralph
