Again, _any_and_all_ Microsoft OSes must be on the first drive to boot. 
There are some "tricks" you can play with either the BIOS or Linux's
LILO booter to change this, but they aren't always trivial.

It always depends on the _model_.  Some vendors vary on their "quality"
-- have _never_ found _any_ component vendor who does good,
consistently, with every model -- unless they are a relatively new
vendors whos only produced one or two models in their lifetime. 
Everybody "screws up" at least once or twice.

Always get a model that is _well_tested_ and _reviewed_ for at least
awhile.

Er, 4.4BSDLite is just a codebase.  If you want to use BSD, choose a
modern flavor.  FreeBSD is most excellent.

I used to like BSD for various things.  Linux just has some much more
development (let alone a better license -- long story), it's hard for
BSD to "keep up."

At this point I'd say if you really want BSD, get a Mac and MacOS X. 
;-P  But it all depends on what you want to do with it.
